Aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF, has been manufactured with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) since the 1950s. Two specific PFAS compounds commonly found in this foam are perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). These synthetic chemicals are designed to suppress flammable-liquid fires by forming a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen it needs to burn.
Both PFOA and PFOS have been identified by the EPA as “emerging contaminants,” meaning they are suspected of causing harmful health effects in humans. Additionally, these chemicals are classified as “persistent,” meaning they do not break down once they enter the human body or the environment. When firefighting foam is used, PFOA and PFOS can spread into the surrounding soil and often contaminate nearby sources of drinking water. Once ingested, these potentially toxic PFAS chemicals from AFFF remain in the body and continue to “bioaccumulate” with further exposure.
